SGQ Project Tour: Paige Anderson of Ponderosa Creative's Montara Wall Hanging
I asked a handful of my favorite quilters, makers and sewists to choose a project from Simple Geometric Quilting and make their own unique version. I love seeing the creative ways people interpret these patterns, choose colors and make bold design choices that reflect their style and aesthetic. I hope these reimaginations will inspire you to create outside of the box with your very own Simple Geometric Quilting projects!
Paige is the multi-passionate creative behind Ponderosa Creative, where she creates quilted home goods, hand dyed fabric, creative supplies (have you smelled that Thread Gloss of hers?!), upcycled apparel, and even branding and graphic design. She shares her process and her life as a maker/entrepreneur openly and honestly through her popular Instagram. Living in Olympia, WA with her family, it’s clear how much the ethos and atmosphere of the beautiful Pacific Northwest inspires her work.
I met Paige last year while we were traveling through the PNW and was lucky enough to have her help make a few of the projects from Simple Geometric Quilting. She made the Antelope Canyon Quilt and gave it her signature wavy quilting treatment that totally made the quilt something extra special. With her love of hand dyed and upcycled fabrics and her playful, wabi-sabi style of quilting, I really wanted to see her own take on a project (or two!) from the book.
Paige chose the Montara Wall Hanging and used the most gorgeous peachy hand dyed fabrics paired with an unbleached cotton for the background. All of the materials and most of the tools she used were secondhand + repurposed, except for the thread. For the quilting, she echoed the lines of the triangles, creating a simple radiating V design. I love how much movement and texture her hand dyed fabric creates, but even more how sustainably this piece was created. A good reminder to use what you have to create something really unique and beautiful!
The original Montara Wall Hanging was inspired by one of my favorites beaches south of San Francisco and uses the humble half square triangle to create movement in this simple wall quilt. Another quick make that’s perfect for scraps, the Montara is also great practice for aligning your triangle points.
