SGQ Project Tour: Lorna Slessor of Cloth & Crescent's Antelope Canyon Throw Quilt
I asked a handful of my favorite quilters, makers and sewists to choose a project from Simple Geometric Quilting and make their own unique version. I love seeing the creative ways people interpret these patterns, choose colors and make bold design choices that reflect their style and aesthetic. I hope these reimaginations will inspire you to create outside of the box with your very own Simple Geometric Quilting projects!
Lorna is the talented young UK-based quilter behind Cloth & Crescent that I was lucky enough to come across after being featured in Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine earlier this year (she’s a production editor by day). I’m so glad I did - Lorna’s designs are fresh + vibrant and her debut quilt pattern, Mirrored Mountains, might be my favorite of 2019!
It seems like Lorna lives and breathes all things quilting and I’m regularly blown away by her modern quilts, so I was really excited to see her bold take on one of the projects from the book.
She chose the Antelope Canyon Throw Quilt and used cream, pink and bright red Kona cottons to make her quilt top, paired with a mustard back and binding. She hand quilted the whole thing with coordinating DMC Perle thread (it was the first full quilt she’s ever hand quilted and now wants to hand quilt ALL of them!) and said she loved making it so much. I’ve been swooning over how her quilt turned out - it’s such a versatile pattern that can take on any combination of colors!
The original Antelope Canyon Throw Quilt was inspired by the undulating, narrow canyon walls and warm colors of Antelope Canyon in southern Utah. Simple in construction and quick to assemble, this quilt perfectly captures that minimalist Southwestern style.
