SGQ Project Tour: Hillary Goodwin of Entropy Always Wins' New Mexico Queen Quilt
I asked a handful of my favorite quilters, makers and sewists to choose a project from Simple Geometric Quilting and make their own unique version. I love seeing the creative ways people interpret these patterns, choose colors and make bold design choices that reflect their style and aesthetic. I hope these reimaginations will inspire you to create outside of the box with your very own Simple Geometric Quilting projects!
Hillary is the talented quilter and maker behind the Entropy Always Wins blog and Instagram, where she documents her incredible quilting, garment making, and creations of all mediums. Her quilts are uniquely modern (much more art than craft) and are regularly featured in modern quilt shows, festivals, exhibits, galleries and magazines. She’s not only a maker though - her day job is an emergency room physician. I love how she incorporates her experience as a doctor into her work to make a strong and personal statement.
After following Hillary for years on Instagram, meeting her at QuiltCon a few years back, and being consistently blown away by the creativity of her work, I couldn’t wait to see her take on one of the quilts from Simple Geometric Quilting!
She went straight for the New Mexico Queen Quilt, one of the largest and most complex designs in the book. Staying true to the Southwestern inspiration of the quilt, she chose a navy, rust and ochre color palette that works as well in the desert as it does in the Sierra Nevada Foothills that she calls home. I love the way that a simple shake up of a colors and slight turning of a few blocks can give this quilt a whole new life!
The original New Mexico Queen Quilt from Simple Geometric Quilting was inspired by the rich culture and beautiful landscapes of New Mexico. The design is fairly complex, but when you break it down into to halves, then rows, then blocks, it becomes a manageable and fun puzzle. I’d love to see how you choose colors and play around with the block orientation on this one to really make it your own!
