SGQ Project Tour: Sienna Parfitt of Not a Primary Color’s Kalaloch Pillow
Earlier this summer I asked a handful of my favorite quilters, makers and sewists to choose a project from Simple Geometric Quilting and make their own unique version. I love seeing the creative ways people interpret these patterns, choose colors and make bold design choices that reflect their style and aesthetic. I hope these reimaginations will inspire you to create outside of the box with your very own Simple Geometric Quilting projects!
Sienna has been documenting her sewing and making practice through her blog, Not A Primary Color, for years. I’ve been following along with her on Instagram since I moved to the Bay Area in 2015 - her multidisciplinary love for making is impressive (as is her daily sketchbook practice!) and I’m pretty sure it was her envious handmade wardrobe that inspired me to start making my own clothes.
I wanted to see how someone outside of the quilting world would interpret the quilts in Simple Geometric Quilting and knew that Sienna had the sewing skills and spot-on aesthetic to make something really beautiful.
She chose the Kalaloch Lumbar Pillow and used only scraps leftover from previous projects, including linen, cotton, and a silk noil that, although luxuriously textured, can be tricky to work with. I love how it turned out though - the combination of fabrics and the color palette is suuuper dreamy!
The original Kalaloch Pillow from Simple Geometric Quilting was inspired by piles of driftwood on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. The design looks complex, but the construction is fairly simple - it’s a great, quick project that’s perfect for using up scraps.
